Shopify’s Online Store 2.0 architecture is packed with new features and upgrades, which made our most recent web development project for Deviant Skincare the most exciting one yet. 2.0 is faster and more customisable, opening up plenty of opportunities for developers to build themes and apps for merchants and shoppers.

Let’s run through some of its features, alongside examples of how the website looks in action.

Better customisation

2.0 empowers both developers and merchants themselves to choose more options for their website and create a more personalised experience for shoppers.

Thanks to JSON templating, modular changeable sections can now be added to all pages, rather than just the homepage.

The theme editor has been upgraded and now displays page content within a tree view in the sidebar, enabling merchants to alter the hierarchy of a page more easily.

More dev friendly

With a new set of developer tools available, it’s safe to say that 2.0 allows more streamlined development. This includes an updated Shopify CLI tool, Theme Check, and the introduction of GitHub integration, which enables the theme to be served from a centralised branch and accept commits directly from the store admin.

Focus on speed

A new default theme known as ‘Dawn’ was launched alongside 2.0. Due to the use of minimal JavaScript, the new version boasts faster load times on page and in the customiser, meaning that merchant stores are likely to load quickly.

Overall, the updated features in 2.0 mean we’re able to build more tailored websites and deliver the best possible solution for our clients. It’s a win win!
